The Drum Studio Build

In this Garden Room Build series, I take you through the end to end steps to build a soundproof music studio and drum kit practice room.

A comprehensive 17 part series.

The Quick Garden Room Build

The second garden room build series focuses on another garden room project which combines a home office space and garden shed. This time the structure is built onto concrete piers, rather than a slab foundation. In due course I will add another breakdown of the build, but in the meantime you can watch the series on YouTube.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should EPS insulation be used for a load bearing slab and not PIR?

I used PIR, but you can use either. The thermal efficiency of PIR is higher so the material is more expensive than EPS.

Why does the insulation go under the concrete?

It helps with the thermal mass of the concrete. The idea being that due to the density of the concrete, it will absorb heat so by insulating under it, it helps the concrete to retain the heat, thus retaining heat in the floor/room.

How do you keep the insulation in place in the sub-floor?

A good method is to measure down the height of the insulation and fix a few nails in the joists so that the insulation cannot fall through.

How do you fix the walls to stop them falling down ?

When putting them up fix a temporary cross brace (a diagonal timber) until you have all 4 up and they can support themselves.
